On the GMAT certain sentence correction mistakes occur very frequently. It is a good idea to be familiar with these mistakes.

Common Mistakes:

  1. Subject-Verb Agreement
  2. Style
  3. Pronoun
  4. Parallelism
  5. Idioms
  6. Mood, Tense and Voice
  7. Comparison
  8. Modifiers

1. Subject-Verb Agreement

  • The subject and verb have to agree in number
  • Ignore the middleman
  • Only 'and' can make two singular subject plural
  • Collective nouns are singular
  • Indefinite pronouns are usually singular
  • THE NUMBER OF is singular
  • A NUMBER OF is plural

Well, is it really that expensive?

A top GMAT tutor can provide you will the knowledge and skills to attain a top score on the GMAT and they can help you to do it in far, far less time that it would take to do on your own. These tutors have learned the GMAT themselves, earned very high scores, and then further mastered the GMAT through teaching and designing thousands of practice questions. They know exactly what you need and can bring you to mastery in a minimal amount of time

For example if you are a beginning student, despite your study you may have a hard time answering the following question:

What is the lowest number that can be multiplied by 36288 to make it a perfect square?

A) 7
B) 27
C) 64
D) 81
E) 121

You may know completely well what a perfect square is but be at a total loss on this question and this is frustrating. You could spend days on MBA and GMAT forums trying to find the answer or at least the process, to never find the right answer. (Remember, the average GMAT score is about at 530, so most people out there do not know any more than you know.)

We could frame this into a GMAT question:
What was the approximate percent change in GMAT registration from 2007 to 2008?
A) 5%
B) 8%
C) 11%
D) 14%
E) 16%

Well, percent change can be easily determined with the following formula (and one you would be well-advised to learn before the exam):

((Final Value - Initial value) / Initial Value)) X 100%

= ((223,159 - 199,896) / 199,896)) X 100% = 11.64% '

This continues to mean that the competition is stronger, the scores are higher, and schools can afford to be more selective with the applicants that they select. Remember, at the end of the day, Universities are also businesses that need to pay bills and to market themselves. It should come as no surprise that top business schools have one big thing in common - high GMAT scores.

In short, a top GMAT tutor will maximize your chances of earning the highest GMAT score possible, lower your stress, lower your workload, and shorten the number of hours that you need to spend studying.

Gmat Preparation Test

After studying for the GMAT for a while, it is inevitably a good idea to take practice tests. You should definitely get used to the rhythm, timing, and nerves of the actual test by taking at least one practice test before you take the real thing. The question then becomes: if it is a good idea and almost everyone recommends doing it, how many should you take? It is certainly tempting to take as many as possible. I initially felt this way when I was studying for the test. After I took my first practice test, however, I got really nervous and worried about all the questions that I missed. I was distracted for the next couple of days and didn't focus on re-enforcing the fundamentals and trying to improve. I quickly realized that while taking a practice test or two is definitely a good thing, taking more than three practice tests is potentially harmful.

As I hint above, taking too many practice tests can cause unnecessary worry and distraction in your studies. You will probably focus hard on the score you got and focus less on re-enforcing the fundamentals of the test with the goal of improving your abilities overall. Because of this, I recommend taking 2-3 tests before you take the real thing. These 2-3 tests will get you accustomed to the timing and rhythm of the test without getting you too worried and distracted. The way to improve on the test is by deeply learning the fundamentals and then going through increasingly difficult practice problems. It serves you no good if you worry a lot about your score and your missed questions on the practice tests. You will only get distracted and lose focus on the study methods that will actually help you improve.

So which practice tests are the best to take? I would recommend taking 1-2 Manhattan GMAT tests and 1-2 official GMAT Prep tests. The Manhattan GMAT tests are great because the math section is actually a little harder than the real test, so you become accustomed to more difficult questions before you take the real thing. The GMAT Prep tests are great because they closely resemble the actual test experience and contain official GMAT questions. I think it's especially important to take official sentence correction and critical reasoning questions, because unofficial ones sometimes have questionable answer choices. Overall, I truly believe taking a total of three tests is the way to go and 1-2 Manhattan GMAT and 1-2 GMAT Prep tests are all you need to ensure success come test day.
